Hampton HS Marching Band’s 2023 field show highlights that ‘No Storm Lasts Forever’
The Hampton High School Marching Band's 2023 field show production, titled "No Storm Lasts Forever," depicts a group of sea voyagers who endure a dangerous storm.
“We look forward to exploring the message behind this title, both in a literal sense, as well as metaphorically as we all experience difficult seasons (storms) in life from time to time,” said HHS Band Director Chad Himmler.
The dance team, color guard, and percussion section depict the ocean by wearing varying shades of blues and grays. The brass and woodwinds are the sailors, wearing dark raincoats during the storm and then removing those coats when the storm is over.
"Underneath the raincoats, the winds wear different shades of yellow because the finale of the show is designed to showcase a radiant sun," noted Mr. Himmler.
The ocean comes to life with 12 rocking buoy props and a few wave/bridge props on the field.
"At the culmination of the performance, the largest buoy transforms into a lighthouse, becoming the focal point," Mr. Himmler said. "Being that it’s a lighthouse, hopefully people will understand the symbolism that we made it back to land.”
The narrative of the show is conveyed through artwork on the front walls flanking both sides of the front ensemble. The show is structured into four distinct movements:
- The Approaching Storm: "The Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel (covered by Disturbed)
- The Storm Hits: "Stormworks," a concert band piece by Stephen Melillo
- Aftermath / Survival: "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen
- Celebration: "Mr. Blue Sky" by the Electric Light Orchestra
The 2023 drum majors are Samantha Nicely, a senior, and Owen Wallace, a junior.
The HHS Marching Band participated in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Marching Band Association (PIMBA) competition at Norwin on Sept. 23. Their schedule for the remainder of the year is as follows:
- October 7: North Allegheny (Allegheny Valley Marching Band Festival)
- October 14: Deer Lakes (PIMBA competition)
