HHS to present 2026 spring musical ‘Once Upon a Mattress'

Hampton High School’s annual spring musical is almost here! Come and join us for a journey as we travel to a kingdom far, far away with Once Upon a Mattress!

Once Upon a Mattress is a classic and comedic musical retelling of "The Princess and the Pea," where the overbearing Queen Aggravain bans marriage in her kingdom until her son, Prince Dauntless, marries a "true" princess, setting up an impossible test for Princess Winnifred (Fred) from the swamp, who must pass a sensitivity test involving a pea under twenty mattresses to prove her royalty, all while the kingdom's inhabitants scheme for their own marriages and freedom from the Queen's tyrannical rule.

The show flips fairy tale tropes with its witty songs and characters, revealing that the legendary test was actually rigged by the Queen to keep Fred from marrying the prince, but Fred's feisty, unconventional nature ultimately wins out, freeing the kingdom.
